Hope For Humanity

Inclusive rehabilitation and technology access initiative (IRATAI) works alongside persons with disabilities and individuals in need of rehabilitation and assistive technology in Nigeria.

Rehabilitation and assistive technology (AT) are vital components of universal health coverage (UHC), contributing to health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, and palliative care. They play a key role in achieving Sustainable Development Goal by improving health, independence, and well-being for all.

Rehabilitation helps individuals regain independence and actively participate in education, work, and community life. With 2.4 billion people worldwide in need, demand for rehabilitation is rising due to aging populations and increasing chronic diseases. However, access remains limited, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where over 50% of those in need go without services. Emergencies further exacerbate these challenges by increasing demand and disrupting services.

Assistive technology complements rehabilitation by empowering individuals to live dignified, productive lives. While 2.5 billion people need AT, access is highly unequal, only 10% of those in low-income countries receive the AT they need, compared to 90% in high-income countries.

With over 35.5 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria facing limited access to essential services, the Inclusive Rehabilitation and Technology Access Initiative (IRATAI) is dedicated to bridging this gap. Through advocacy, rehabilitation services, and assistive technology access, IRATAI empowers PWDs, promoting independence and inclusion across the country.

How we're changing lives

Most people will need assistive technology at some point in their lives, especially as they age. While some may require assistive technology temporarily, such as after an accident or illness, others may require it for a longer period or throughout their lifespan.

Assistive technology is most needed by:

  • older people
  • children and adults with disabilities
  • people with long term health conditions such as diabetes, stroke and dementia.
